At the outer edges of the Dublin commuter belt, Westmeath was always likely
to get hit hard by price falls. But in the final part of 2008, asking
prices crumbled by 9.9 per cent, bringing the average 2008 house price
down to €232,000.
In 2010 the Co Westmeath Average asking price of a home was €166,000.
In 2010, the market fell by half the rate of the previous year, which
might be counted as good news.
Athlone is home to a thriving Institute of Technology which attracts thousands
of students each year in need of rental accommodation. Estate Agents reckon
this could lure back investors as soon as the market shows signs of recovery.
