November 2010 sees the launch of the Garda.ie new speed cameras.
A private company is being employed to provide mobile speed cameras at 600 locations all over Ireland.
We are told these locations are accident blackspots and that the cameras will operate 24 hours a day.

The Garda.ie website crashed when it was announced - because of all the drivers trying to find out the locations of all the speed cameras.

The speed cameras will be rolled out incrementally and are expected to be fully operational by February 2011
They are being operated by a consortium called GoSafe which includes Spectra, French firm Egis and Australian multinational Redflex. There will only be 45 vans with cameras that will move between the 600 locations. Gosafe HQ is located at the Spectra plant in Listowel, Kerry. Spectra is owned by millionaire and hotel owner Xavier McCauliffe a well known Fianna Fail supporter.



The Department of Justice have previously estimated the proposed cameras could generate half a million speeding penalties a year. If that is true - at t €80 per speeding fine, the privatised speed cameras alone could generate roughly €40 million a year. A Garda spokesman said the cameras were not being installed as a revenue gathering exercise but were a means to improve safety levels on the State’s roads.
But - in order for the 45 vans to catch 500,000 speeders a year - they will have to catch 30 each every day. SInce they are only operating for less than 5 hours each per day (6000 hours a month in total ) - they would need to catch 6 speeders an hour or 1 every 10 minutes of monitoring. This doesn't sound reasonable.

The new GoSafe contract will have no impact on speed enforcement work currently carried out by the Garda. They have eight mobile cameras in vans, 400 hand-held speeding devices and about 100 automatic number plate recognition cameras which are installed in Garda cars .
