While 2010 was better than 2009, when prices fell by 36%, the county
is still on its knees and values tumbled a further 13%. The holiday-home
market has all but disappeared. Coastal towns such as Bettystown and
Laytown were popular with buyers during the boom years, but few people
have been willing to buy a luxury item. Many of the homes bought there
last year were by owner-occupier commuters. Investors have fled the
market, although more people are renting. This meant rental prices
stabilised.
County
Meath is well served by a high quality road network which is supported
by an first class public transport system. This offers very short
commuting times, typically between 10 and 30 minutes, for people living
and working in the county. Housing in County Meath is considerably
less expensive than in major urban centres - house prices and rental
costs are as much as 30% lower in the county. Due to Meath's low crime
rate and excellent road safety record housing and car insurance premiums
are also lower. |
