In July 2004 there were over 50,000 broadband users in Ireland (figure supplied by Eircom)
This is low compared to the several hundred thousand old-fashioned dial-up internet customers.

"Normal" Broadband is still not available in many of the smaller towns and rural areas. Eircom is upgrading the lines gradually in most large towns - so anyone within about 2km of an exchange will be able to use their phone line for broadband access - eventually.
You might need to consider Satellite Broadband if you are living in rural areas and cannot do without broadband.

An alternative to broadband in Ireland: is offered by OnSpeed. They provide software which compresses the data and speeds up transfer times by up to 5 times the normal dial up rate. No wires or cables - just a file to be downloaded and it's less the €40 a year. No contract and even a 14 day money back guarantee. Click below for more details.

Digiweb Broadband

Digiweb are planning to extend its network nationally and build Ireland’s first fourth generation (4G) mobile phone network. It will launch new products - its main product, called Metro, is a package of broadband and phone for less than €20 a month.

Some of the main Irish broadband providers are:
BT Ireland
Eircom
UTV
NTL
Some of the newer broadband providers in Ireland:
Perlico
, one of several providers challenging the bigger players -
Imagine already runs the Gaelic Telecom and Access Telecom
Ice Broadband, which is offering wireless broadband services.
Pure Telecom, which was founded in 2002
Irish Broadband, a division of National Toll Roads (NTR) and the main provider of wireless broadband, US firm Clearwire entered the Irish market a year ago
